WILSON AUDIO SPEAKER SETUP PROCEDURE
This is separate from the speaker assembly instructions from Wilson and is designed to get your speakers to the most neutral position in the room and for best bass response and best treble.
Tools you will need:
Blue painters tape
Black Sharpie
Tape measure
Music selection with constant deep bass
Music selection with extended high treble
Music selection with well recorded female vocals (Diana Krall, Joni Mitchell, etc)
First, remove the spikes from the bottom of your speakers or stands to allow for easy sliding into position on the floor. Temporarily move the speakers out of the immediate positioning area.
With you back against the wall to the rear of the speaker start speaking in a loud voice. Step forward putting your heel to the toe of your feet, constantly speaking. You want to listen for the sound of your voice to stop reflecting of the wall behind you. When you hear that reflection stop, take a 3-4?of the painters tape and lay a line on the floor or carpet. Make sure it抯 parallel with the rear wall. Now, from that p[osition start stepping forward once again, speaking in a loud clear voice, heel to toe until you start to hear the sound of your voice reflecting off the rear wall of the room. Lay another strip of the painters tape on the floor. Repeat the procedure with each of the side walls as well. What you should wind up with is a 3?square of painters tape about 2-3 feet from each wall.
Now take your speakers and place them in the center of each square. Tow them in so what you see is the front facet dead on, with a tiny sliver of the inner part of the cabinet showing. Now you抮e going to take another 3?strip of painters tape and lay it so it runs parallel to the side wall of the room. The tape should contact the rear corner of the speaker cabinet. Mark the tape in 綌 increments. Now, connecting just one speaker, play the music selection with the constant deep bass. You want to slide the speaker forward by 綌 increments, then slid it back wards the same. What you抮e listening for is for the bass to snap into focus. There may be several false peaks that may have lots of bass but it won抰 be defined. You want to listen for the position where the bass is tight and defined and you can tell the pitch value of the notes. Now do the same for the other speaker. They should wind up the same distance from the wall behind them. Now, go back to a single speaker connected. Take a 3?piece of painters tape and lay it on the floor so that the piece of tape now contacts the front outer edge of the speaker. Make the 綌 increments with the Sharpie once again. Take the music selection with lots of high treble (solo piano works well for this) and slide the speaker back and forth in 綌 increments until you hear the highs come into focus.
Now it抯 time to use that female vocal selection. With both speakers connected, play that selection. You should hear the voice emerge from a phantom center channel dead between the speakers. If the image seems to be skewed to the right, move the left speaker out by small increments until the image is dead center. If the image is skewed to the left, perform the same action on the right speaker. This is where you want to get really exacting
Now take some small bits of painters tape and mark where each corner of the cabinets are. Trying to not disturb the speakers position, reattach the spikes on the bottom of the cabinet and you should be good to go! |
