I've been listening to mine all afternoon and I have to say that I'm totally thrilled with it. Mp3's that once sounded thin and compressed have body and color that wasn't there before (listening via usb connection 320kbs mp3). I don't know if it's neutral, but it is just so lush and smooth - I like! With uncompressed Flac files through Foobar, the sound is absolutely immaculate - was just listening to some Reference Recordings from HDtracks and I'm just floored....awesome. So far, I have no problems with this puppy.
Overall, I'd say the sound signature is warm, while still being extended in the bass and treble - pretty bassy actually. While I haven't listened through my headphones cause I'm so happy with the sound out of my hi-fi rig, I'm pretty confident I'll be happy when I hook my headphone amp to it.
Oh yeah, Thank God I have such an awesome wife - she gave it to me for my B-day.

btw, I hooked up the v-dac to my x-10 v3 = sounds awesome. Oh yeah, also hooked my arcam cd73 to it via spidif....still can't decide which I like better. The v-dac is more lush and sweeter than the arcam dac. The Arcam is a little more detailed, but thinner and brighter. I have to say that I'm leaning towards the v-dac, which means I got two upgrades out of it! Also cool because I get tube sound through both computer and cd - sweet!

My V-DAC arrived yesterday, finally! I baught the QED signature coax cable also, to get the most of this new set-up.
My initial impressions: very transparant and good definition, many details without any digital harshness in treble!
My A to B comparison (CD DAC vs V-DAC is not 100% correct due to different interlinks, though both are high quality): whereas the V-DAC delivers more of what I described above, my CD player has more weight / authority / pressured sound (expressing audio in another language is no easy task). Perhaps this sounding is a singular quality of my classic CD player (SONY CDP 779ES: made in 1992), since it has huge powersupplies for both the digital and the analogue stages. Also, I attached an excellent powercord and plug to my CD player, absent from the V-DAC. Now I miss that sense of scale with the V-DAC, that cannot simply be restored by increasing lows on the amp or subwoofer. Any suggestions anybody, what might help here?
This is not so much criticism to the V-DAC, since I believe it delivers true value for the bucks.

I have to go along with that conclusion. The DacMagic sounds less enjoyable than the V-DAC. A bit difficult to detect on classical music, but more modern fast transient records exposes a softness in the DacMagic that makes it unbearable to listen to for me through speakers. The air movement in the bass region is far too woolly. The V-DAC does a better job of it, but it lacks pace and depth. Crescendos and sudden dynamic range explosive burst seem toned down.
That's after 4 days of burning in. I'll retake the tests at the end of the coming week and see if the results are still the same.

Well I chime in. I have had the V-Dac for 3 days and used it for about 20 hours. My comparison is with Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic and Asus Xonar D2X. I like the warmth and engaging sound signature, I even noticed those punchy highs anadin talked about, but PRAT seems somewhat off for sure. It is quite detailed and clear, i picked up more microdetails with it than with my other equipment.Bass could be better and have more weight. Xonar has that PRAT I crave for, but it is too neutral for my taste and could be more engaging. If only there would be DAC that could have all the positive traits of Xonar D2X and V-Dac for about the same money - it would be steal money wise. I will continue burning in my V-DAC, but tbh I don't expect miracles to happen. I have never heard CA DAcmagic, but the way it is described makes me precautious. Seems that it sound signature is closer to Xonar and it has more flexibility with different input and output options. I had hopes that this would end my lust for new audio gear, but it seems that I have to save more for MHDT Havana or Paradisea + /3 DAC . |
