There are a number of reasons why some DA10 owners may prefer the "sound" of their system using a Preamp between the DA10 and their amplifier or powered monitors.
The most obvious one is that they may have a preamp that has a "sound" that compliments or compensates for other parts of their system. For example, a tube preamp might "soften" the sound of a system with a "hard" sounding amplifier.
Many HiFi listeners have spent a lot of time and effort getting their system to sound just the way they want it to, so if eliminating one of the components changes this characteristic, the more "straight-wire" approach of using the DA10 as the volume control may not give them the result they want.
We also have many DA10 customers who do like the "straight-wire" approach and feel it gives them the best result with their system.
Either approach is "valid," and the DA10 (and now the DA11) has the flexibility to work with either approach if the customer's system changes in the future.
The digitally controlled analog volume circuitry has sonic transparency that is very close to that of a fixed attenuator, so there is no real down-side to setting it to a given volume and using an external volume control to adjust the listening level.
